High Achiever of the Week
School: Kayenta Monument Valley
Has a 4.63 GPA … Setter for volleyball … Member of student council, National Honor Society, American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) … Historian of her senior class … President of prom committee her junior year … Volunteers at soup kitchens and helped build a women’s shelter … Fell in love with the sport when she started playing volleyball in third grade … Started playing varsity her sophomore year … She said she’s become a better leader by finding ways to motivate her teammates and herself … She’s currently working on her college applications, but Stanford is her dream school, and she wants to study bioengineering … “She has evolved since her freshman year,” coach Rennell Gilmore said. “She’s everything you can ask for from an athlete and a student.”
Male Athlete of the Week presented by La-Z-Boy Furniture
School: Glendale Joy Christian
Has a 3.6 GPA … Three-year starter who has led the football team to three playoff berths as a right guard … Participated in four playoff runs … On Nov. 21, he paved the way for numerous rushing touchdowns and protected QB Matt Mitchell for multiple passing touchdowns in a 41-20 win against Round Valley … Competes in basketball, discus and shot put … Part of the National Society of High School Scholars … Volunteers with Heart for the City … Played football since he was 7 years old … His brother, Cody, is one of his biggest supporters, helping Wahlers in the weight room and cheering him on in football … Planning on attending Grand Canyon University, but he’s keeping options open … Wants to play football in college … “He’s always going to be a kid we can count on,” coach Brian Cole said. “He’ll help anybody out with anything.”

School: Cave Creek Cactus Shadows
Has a 4.67 GPA … Plays point guard in basketball and defensive specialist in volleyball … Competes in long jump and triple jump in track and field, but she plans to sprint this upcoming season, as well … Participated in all three sports in four years of high school … Vice president of National Honor Society … Member of French Honor Society and National English Honor Society … Volunteer at Cave Creek Rodeo … Said her favorite memory was when she and her team attended the Nike Invitational Tournament and listened to Misty May-Treanor speak at the event … Was accepted to the University of Arizona honors program with the Wildcat Excellence Award, but plans on applying to Washington University at St. Louis and UCLA … “From the physical point and mental, cognitive point, she’s grown immensely,” coach Richie Willis said.
