Coach Steve Belles won’t be leading Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton’s football team Thursday against Peoria Centennial after he was ejected for arguing with a referee during a freshman game on Tuesday.

Principal Ken James confirmed that Belles got ejected from the freshman game that Centennial won at Hamilton.

“He’s passionate about the whole program, not just the varsity,” James said. “Bylaws are bylaws, and, according to the bylaws, he can’t coach the next game.”

Belles was watching the freshman game on the sideline before he got into it with an official and was ejected, James said.

“It was a good, close ballgame,” James said. “He was arguing some calls and he got ejected.”

Offensive coordinator Deke Schutes was to coach the 5-0 Huskies against 3-1 Centennial. Lane Reynolds will call the defense. Schutes and Belles shared calling the offensive plays.

Belles won’t be in the stadium, James said, and will be watching the game on television.

This is the first game Belles will miss since he was hired to lead Hamilton in 2006.
