Army All-American Game is family affair for Georgia's Marquez Callaway

Marquez Callaway grew up in a military family. His mother, father, grandmother and uncle all served and his brother is currently stationed in Korea.

Given the chance to take part in the U.S. Army All-American Game and honor the armed forces, he accepted immediately.

Callaway, a four-star defensive back/wide receiver, was presented with his honorary jersey for the game Tuesday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to Warner Robins (Ga.) High School.

“Growing up in a military family has taught me a lot of the things. I’m real disciplined,” he said. “I’m real respectful and learned how to care for each other and people around me just like how you take care of one another out in battle.”

Callaway’s brother has been in Korea for five months of his year tour, but Marquez is hoping his brother will be able to get to San Antonio for the Jan. 9 game.

“He’s going to try to come to the game,” Marquez said.

While Callaway is ranked as the No. 7 athlete recruit in the nation by the 247Sports Composite, he will leave Warner Robins as the school’s career leading receiver. He recently set the receptions mark and is nearing the yardage mark.

“It means a lot because a lot of great players came from here,” he said. “They went to the league and a lot went to college. Just to be put alongside those great players is bigger than having the record.”

Callaway has yet to take an official visit after plans for him to visit Utah last weekend fell through. He said he does not have any other official visits scheduled. He has gotten around, though, to South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee for unofficial visits since the season began.

“I haven’t narrowed it down to a top 5,” he said. “I have been keeping a mental checklist of  which ones I think will be best and I’m looking for more. I was thinking about waiting until Signing Day but anything can change.”
