Centennial’s Tanner Hawthorne (75) celebrates after their Division I State Championship win against Desert Ridge on Nov. 27, 2015 in Glendale, Ariz.

Tanner Hawthorne was about 6 feet, 220 pounds as a freshman. He is 6-6, 280 now.

And football recruiting is heating up for the Peoria Centennial senior offensive lineman since helping pave the way for the Coyotes’ Division I state football championship.

He might have been Centennial’s most improved player this past season. It is showing up by the calls and texts he and his coach, Richard Taylor, have been getting.

“Every year he made huge strides,” Taylor said. “His sophomore year, he was gangly and uncoordinated. Last year, he played a lot. This year, he was a beast.”

Hawthorne was a big part of the best offensive line in Division I. He said last week coaches from Arizona State, Colorado, New Mexico and Northern Arizona came by Centennial to visit with him. He said Arizona and Utah State also are showing interest.

San Diego State, Montana, Weber State, South Dakota State, Adams State and Missouri State all have offered scholarships.

Hawthorne didn’t really come into his own until this season. He said he has former ASU offensive lineman Ron Sowers partly to thank for his improved abilities.

“Over my time in high school, Centennial football has introduced me to several great coaches with whom I train, one of them being Ron Sowers,” Hawthorne said. “I would do private workouts with him. That’s where I get my footwork and agility and my great technique from.”

Hawthorne also became dedicated in the weight room.

“I set a goal for myself before the season started and it was to play Division I (college) football,” he said.

The big guy is well on his way.
