Credentials:
Before the game against St. Michael Teurlings coach Sonny Charpentier said his skill position players needed to make plays against St. Michael’s aggressive defense. Challenge accepted. Cantrelle was the Rebels leading receiver in the first round of the playoffs with seven receptions for 202 yards. His performance helped lead Teurlings to a blowout win against the Warriors in the first round and a matchup against De La Salle in the quarterfinals.
Background:
Cantrelle spent last season as the Rebels’ backup quarterback behind Kelley, but Charpentier said before the season they wanted to get Cantrelle on the field more to take advantage of his athleticism.
The junior missed the middle of the season due to injury, but has been lights out for the Rebels since returning to the field.
Lagniappe:
Cantrelle is a two sport athlete and despite his skill on the football field, his best sport is baseball.
During his sophomore season, Cantrelle helped lead the Rebels to an appearance in the state final game as a pitcher and a shortstop.
Thanks to his efforts on the baseball diamond, Cantrelle will continue his baseball career at the next level, plying his trade for the Ragin’ Cajuns after committing to UL in October.
“They just have a family atmosphere that really appealed to me, I think that was the biggest thing,” Cantrelle said. “The biggest selling point for me is that they are grinders, that’s their big thing. I admire that about the players there. That’s something I want to be part of.”
