Meryl Gatti, senior
Wilmington Friends girls basketball
THE WEEK: Scored nine points in a 47-30 win over Tatnall on Friday, then had eight points, seven assists and five rebounds in a 55-48 victory at Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
THE TURNAROUND: The win over Mount Pleasant came just 18 hours after the Quakers downed Tatnall. “This is definitely a big win for us,” Gatti said Saturday. “… Coming into the game today, we were definitely all really tired. But we were able to gather ourselves and really push it.”
THE COACH SAYS: “Meryl is very versatile,” Friends coach Carolyn Connors said. “… She can dribble, she can drive, she can shoot and she can post up if we need her inside. This year we’ve asked her to move out to the side to more of a swing guard, and she has absolutely stepped up to that.”
THE VERSATILITY: Gatti was first-team All-State in field hockey in the fall, and also is a solid player on the Quakers’ girls lacrosse team. “I’ve been playing lacrosse the longest, but over the years both field hockey and basketball have become huge parts of my life,” she said. “Honestly, they all keep me occupied. I love being part of teams. … Each sport is so different, and that’s why I think it’s great to transition to playing basketball in the winter, getting me fit for lacrosse in the spring. They all kind of help each other.”
THE PASSING: “She’s incredibly selfless,” Connors said. “She will absolutely pass to one of her teammates if they are in a better position to shoot than her.”
THE TEAM GAME: “For me, shooting, passing, getting a shot – it’s a team game,” Gatti said. “I don’t care much about making shots as long as I can help the team get shots and get points.”
THE CLASSROOM: Gatti’s favorite subject is Biology. “It definitely pushes me and keeps me on track,” she said. “It’s a two-year course, high-level bio. There are quizzes every week, homework all the time, so it definitely keeps me going and I’m really interested in the material.”
THE FUTURE: Gatti plans to go to college to major in Business, but has yet to decide on a destination.
