DEXTER – Ty Kight is a junior wrestler for West Laurens High School, who competes in a sport he loves.
“I don’t have a whole lot of skill”, says Kight. “I just try to outwork my guy and it usually pays off.”
His coach Ed Bland agrees, “He’s just a hard worker. Really, his practice work is his biggest asset. He works hard. He doesn’t complain with anything we ask him to do. He just does pretty much what we ask.”
Even when he’s not in the headgear and tights, Ty knows school work still comes first.
Kight says, ” I plan to go to a really good college and get a really good job because I don’t think I can wrestle for a living. But it’s a nice sport and I love it and my grades are important to me.”
Bland explains, “Ever since I’ve been coaching Ty, I’ve never had to worry about his grades. He’s always had his grades where they are supposed to be. Usually he’s our academic scholar every year and does a really good job for us.”
When he’s sidelined and not on the mat, the junior cheers on his teammates with as much passion as he uses to pin his opponent.
“This is the most competitive sport I’ve been a part of”, says the junior wrestler. “I think people are missing a high level of competition that no one really gets to see. Its almost like these two guys are fighting just to pin each other on the mat, it’s pretty awesome.”
And with quality character like that is why he’s our Athlete Of The Week
