Maybe the hallways of Andrews aren’t bustling with able-bodied football players.

Give the Wildcats a break.

With only 272 students, they are the least likely member of the nine remaining teams in Western North Carolina which have a 2-0 record.

Andrews was picked to finish dead-last in the Smoky Mountain Conference coaches preseason poll.

“We talk about those things,” third-year coach Avery Cutshaw said with a coy tone in his voice.

“We’ve gotten off to a good start, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”

The Wildcats are coming off a 29-24 home win over Tellico Plains (Tenn.) and travel to Mitchell on Friday.

Taylor Parker rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns (20, 28 and 42 yards) against Tellico Plains. He also threw for 63 yards and a fourth score – a 22-yard touchdown throw to Will Hogan.

Dillan Ward added a team-high 130 rushing yards off of 29 carries.

Andrews has already matched or surpassed its wins total from 10 previous football seasons since 2000. The Cherokee County team’s last 2-0 start occurred in 2011, but prior to that it hadn’t happened since 1995.

“It feels awesome,” Parker said.

“But we’ve gotta stay focused. We’re playing a lot better and the support has been great. We just want to keep it going.”

Leading tacklers so far for Andrews are Grayson Parker (8.0 per game), Ward (7.0), Drew Pyle (6.0) and William Parker (6.0).

The Wildcats travel to undefeated Mitchell (2-0) on Friday.

“We’re going to play a very good football team this week,” Cutshaw said.

“We’ve got some size, but not the size that they’ve got. We do some similar things and each present a lot of different formations. It should be a good test. The best thing about 2-0 is seeing how good the kids feel about themselves. There is a lot of enthusiasm right now.”
