The Palm Desert Aztecs boys basketball team faced a strong Division 1AA team in the second round of the Beaumont tournament Wednesday and came away with a victory.
Will Struthers scored 21 points and Gabe Martinez added 20 points as the Aztecs scored a 60-56 win over Vista Murrieta, Struthers and Martinez each added four assists, while Dalton Casserly-Simmons added eight points and nine rebounds. Head coach Jim Servin said Alex McGrath hit key free throws down the stretch to keep the Aztecs in the lead.
The Aztecs (2-0) advance to the semifinals of the Beaumont tournament Friday at 6 p.m.
Palm Springs 64, Sultana 50 — John Rich lead the Indians with 34 points in their opening game of the season in Hesperia.
Palm Springs will next play in the Artesia tournament next week.
Rancho Mirage 95, West Valley 57 — The Rattlers raced to a 65-35 halftime lead and then coasted to the big win to improved to 2-0 on the season.
Koby Alvarez led Rancho Mirage with 18 points, while Daryn Evans and Charles Neal both had 16 points. Bryan Talley, Tyrell Robinson and Deryhan Harris all with 10 points as all 11 Rattlers scored in the game. Matt Tiedeman lead the team with 12 rebounds.
Rancho Mirage will be home Friday against La Quinta.
Desert Mirage 3, Coachella Valley 1 — The Rams scored two goals in the first half and added a goal just after halftime for a 3-0 lead on the way to a win in the team’s first match of the season.
Alejandro Pimentel and Ramses Mora each scored a goal and had an assist, while Armando Rivera scored a goal on an assist by Juan Gutierrez. Fred Zanagoza players well on both offense and defense.
Rancho Mirage 39, Palm Springs 38 — With six pins on the night, the Rattlers overcame a forfeit because of an injury in the heavyweight division to edge the Indians in Rancho Mirage’s first match of the season.
The Rancho Mirage pins came from Kevin Ndungu in the 120-pound division (1:11), Marcus Lopez in the 126 division (2:28), Drew Matyear in the 132 division (1:16), Kyle Whitefield in the 160 division (2:36), Migual Roman in the 170 division (1:12) and Abraham Jimenez in the 195 division (2:27).
The Rattlers wrestlers will compete individually in the Rialto Carter tournament this weekend.
