The Barron Collier Cougars made the Lely Trojans their latest prey in a dominating 44-0 road victory. Barron Collier (4-1) used a 31-point second quarter to blow open the contest.
Starting quarterback Jack Bueltel began the scoring in the first quarter with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Simpson. Jamel Davis bulldozed in standing from 21 yards in the second quarter to make it 14-0.
Next the Cougars got tricky. Bueltel lateraled the ball to back-up QB Brian Chancy, who hit tight end Matt Heuerman with a 35-yard strike. The play was set up so well there was not another player within 30 yards of Heuerman. Dana Brown scored standing as well from 11 yards, and Johan Bonilla kicked a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make it 38-0. Brown opened the 2nd half with a 95-yard kickoff return to conclude the scoring.
Bueltel and Chancy combined to go 15-for-17 with three touchdowns and no interceptions for 274 yards. Heuerman caught six passes for 176 yards and two scores. Barron Collier outgained Lely 351 to 87 yards in the first half, 457 to 238 for the game, and forced five Trojans turnovers.
Cougars coach Mark Jackson said both his quarterbacks “like to throw the ball around a bit, and Heuerman is special. He creates match-up problems and is a heck of a football player.”
Next week Barron Collier visits undefeated Palmetto Ridge, while Lely (0-5) hosts Mariner.
