Highland High School baseball coach John Buonamano can’t predict what is going to take place in the Section 9 Class B tournament.
But he liked finishing the regular season in a winning way.
The host Huskies beat Rhinebeck 5-3 to close out the season on Monday, their senior day.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen in sectionals, but it was a nice moment for the seniors to step onto the field at home one last time,” said Buonamano, whose Huskies finished 9-8.
Michael Doxey collected two hits including a triple, and drove in a run. Cory Garcia and Isaiah Daubon each had one hit and two RBI. Pat Cerniglia and Ian Bogdanowicz both finished 1 for 3.
On the mound, Vinny Valentino tossed six innings and struck out seven batters. He finished the regular season with a 5-1 record.
“Vinny has been consistent for us all year. He throws a lot of strikes,” Buonamano said. “All our pitchers have kept us in ballgames, and any time you have a pitcher that goes out and gives you a shot to win, it’s comforting.”
Chris Cassens (2 for 4), Matt Montero (2 for 3) and Matt Martin (2 for 3) highlighted the day for Rhinebeck.
