The baseball teams from John Jay and Roy C. Ketcham high schools know each other well and they’ll become even better acquainted Thursday.
No. 17 seed John Jay topped No. 16 East Ramapo 7-1 in a Section 1 Class AA outbracket game on Wednesday, setting up their fourth game of the season at host and top-seeded Ketcham in Wappingers Falls. Ketcham and John Jay each won home games this season and Ketcham won a game at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill.
“Playing with pressure has been our whole year,” John Jay coach Eric Frink said. “We’re experienced with that playing in the league we’re in. Every time we played them was a two-run game. We’re expected to lose. No one is going to pick us to win and that’s fine.”
On Wednesday, senior pitcher Mark Howell starred for the Patriots (7-14), striking out 10 and walking one. Allowing an earned run and six hits over seven innings.
“He was unbelievable,” Frink said. “He needed to throw strikes to keep us in the game and he did. I’m proud of all the kids, but I’m exceptionally proud of Mark.”
JV callup J.B. Lynch’s squeeze bunt in the fourth inning scored David Deberardinis to put the Patriots up 2-1. Jason Lawrence’s two-run double was a highlight in a five-run seventh inning for John Jay. Other contributors for John Jay were Dan DiMarzo (two RBI) and Peter Demeglio (RBI).
