Sam Fitzgerald’s game-high 21 points led the host John Jay High School girls basketball team to a 51-34 victory over rival Roy C. Ketcham Saturday in Wiccopee.
Marion Dietz scored 12 points for the Patriots, who turned a 9-9 tie after the opening period into a 28-12 halftime lead.
“We made some adjustments after the first quarter,” head coach Larry Brooks said after his Patriots improved to 4-6 on the season. “We were just calming down, getting the nerves out and playing our game.”
Katie Wall scored 10 points to lead the Indians from Wappingers Falls, who fell to 5-6 on the season.
“The girls did what they had to do to get the win,” Brooks said. “We’re starting to look better each game, and that’s the goal.”
The game was part of John Jay’s “Pink Out” event, which raised funds and awareness for the local Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.
The boys and girls JV and varsity teams from the Wappingers Central School District’s two high schools faced off to benefit the organization. Friday’s inclement weather pushed the event back a day, but Brooks said it was a success nonetheless.
“Having it on a Saturday hurt a little bit, but it was still a good crowd,” he said. “It’s a great event for the whole community and the whole school. It’s a good event for the girls, a way for them to give back just by playing a game. It’s nice to see what we can do and help such a great organization. The kids don’t even realize what an impact they have.”
