ASHEVILLE – Roberson gave Asheville High all it could handle.
Reggie Battle’s 2-yard touchdown run with 2:34 to go allowed the Cougars to take Friday’s 28-21 home win.
Battle carried the ball 29 times for a game-high 127 yards and also scored on runs of 9 and 15 yards. The senior now has 1,225 yards this season.
Devon Davidson threw for 198 yards with a second-quarter touchdown pass to Isiah Drummond that covered 80 yards. Drummond had a team-high 113 receiving yards.
Asheville (8-1, 3-1) leads the all-time series with Roberson (2-7, 1-3) by a 20-5 count.
Friday’s latest installment in the Buncombe County and Mountain Athletic Conference rivalry was tied 14-14 at halftime.
Freshman quarterback Luke Deal made his second consecutive start for the Rams, passing for 115 yards. Denzel Summey made a 69-yard touchdown reception at the 5:50 mark of the second quarter, and Lejuan Rush had a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Asheville was No. 8 in this week’s Associated Press rankings for NCHSAA 3-A. The Cougars have a short turnaround before a live TV game Oct. 29 at North Buncombe. The game will be broadcast on WMYA (40).
Roberson’s next game is Oct. 30 at home against Reynolds.
