Prattville Rickey Stafford (34) hits a layup around Lee’s Treaton Clayton (0) during the game Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at Lee High School in Montgomery, Ala.
A late third-quarter run provided some separation as the Robert E. Lee Generals pulled away to beat Prattville 71-51 on Tuesday night.
But the win was bittersweet for Lee’s new swingman Tommy Burton.
After playing for St. Jude the previous two seasons, Burton joined the Generals after St. Jude closed its doors at the end of the 2013-14 school year.
Monday’s matchup was the first time Burton had been on the court with his former coach Earl Taylor, who now coaches the Lions.
“It was good seeing coach, but it was hard playing against him being on the opposing sideline,” Burton said. “But we still had to strap our shoes on and get ready to play.”
The two shared words before tipoff.
“He was just like, “Tommy B, I miss you.’ And I was like, ‘I miss you too coach,'” Burton said.
The highly-favored Generals (19-2, 3-0 Class 7A, Area 3) put together an 11-0 run at the end of the third to take a 54-41 lead into the final period. Prattville (3-7, 0-3) missed two open layups that would’ve tied the game at 43-43 before Lee made its run.
After an even first quarter, Lee opened the second quarter with a 15-2 run. The Lions responded with an 11-0 run of their own and Lee led 35-32 at the half.
“Coming off an emotional win over Jeff Davis, a rivalry game, it usually is like that (the team coming out slow),” Lee coach Bryant Johnson said. “The guys played with so much energy, and I think too sometimes kids look at scores and compare it to other teams we’ve played, and they think they can just go out there and show up and win. But it’s not like that. I didn’t think we matched their energy early.”
Kendarius Hartwell led the Generals with 16 points and six rebounds. Trenton Clayton added 11 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks. Henry Ruggs and Rod Scott each had 11 points. Burton chipped in nine points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Reggie Calhoun led Prattville with 13 points. Carlos Coleman and Cody Smith each added eight points.
On Friday, the Generals host Enterprise and the Lions host Jeff Davis.
Robert E. Lee girls 73,
Areleatha Gipson scored 17 points for the Generals as they cruised to victory. The Generals bounced back from a heart-breaking loss to rival Jeff Davis last week.
“It feels real good just to come back and play another game and win,” Gipson said. “We played as a team today. It’s just feels good to be back (to our winning ways).”
J’ona Graham added 13 points for Lee (18-4, 2-1). Tykeria Williams chipped in with nine.
Jordan Stewart scored 12 points to lead Prattville. Alexis Nowak followed with five points.
