Behind a gem of an outing from pitcher Aaron Sheppard, No. 4 Benton will make their third straight Class 4A quarterfinals with a 3-0 win against No. 13 Lakeshore to shore up the second-round series.
Sheppard allowed just three hits and struck out three with just one walk issued.
Lakeshore pitcher Kenny Letort held a powerful Benton lineup to just three hits as well, but the Tigers scratched out runs on an error, a Tanner Craft RBI-walk and a Taylor Ward RBI-single.
Benton hosts No. 5 Teurlings Catholic in a best-of-three series to go to the state tournament.
Tioga 10, Loyola 2
After a defensive first game, Class 4A No. 1 Tioga’s bats woke up to the tune of 11 hits in the series-clinching win Saturday.
Four different Tioga batters recorded multiple hits. Tioga scored five second-inning runs to build a permanent cushion.
Loyola’s Nathan Jones recorded three of the Flyers’ six hits, but he allowed nine runs (eight earned) in three innings.
St. Thomas More 12, North DeSoto 8
STM hit three home runs led by Mason Pamplet’s grand slam as the Class 4A No. Cougars swept North DeSoto in a second-round series.
STM’s O’Neal Lockridge and Will Bellamy added home runs as the Cougars piled up 12 hits, most of them coming off North DeSoto ace Matt Ramsey.
With a 2-2 tie after three innings, the Cougars responded with a three-run, five-run and two-run frames to pull away.
Hunter Speights (3-for-4), Ramsey (2-4) and Alex Boone (2-3) led the Griffins’ offense in the loss.
