Darien Davis and KJ Fontenot combined for five goals and nine points Saturday night to lead Port Huron to a 6-1 win against Marysville in a nonconference hockey game at McMorran Pavilion.
Davis had three goals – including the go-ahead goal in the first period – and one assist, while Fontenot had two goals and three assists as the Big Reds ended a four-game losing streak.
“I guess we just controlled it pretty well down in our zone,” Davis said. “And I found him a couple times down there. We just found open space.”
Added Fontenot: “I think it was one of those nights where we connected well, knew where we were at all the time. That was pretty much it.”
Will Kriewall added a goal for the Big Reds, while Carter Smith and Dayne Davis each had two assists. Pat O’Brien, Trevor Sprague, Andrew Morris and Matt Pringle each had one assist. Ally Fetterly picked up the win, stopping nine shots. The Big Reds out-shot Marysville 34-10.
“Marysville came out firing in the first period, and honestly we weren’t ready for that,” Port Huron coach Ben Pionk said. “They had a step we didn’t expect. It took us a period to kind of catch up to them.”
Cooper Dove scored the lone goal for Marysville, with assists from Tyler Nunez and Kevin Straney. Brenden Campbell stopped 28 shots in the loss.
“We were hot and cold,” Marysville coach Paul Moretz said. “That’s kind of been our M.O. the whole year, though. We’ll play real good solid hockey for about three or four minutes, then they’ll go back to their bad habits for four or five minutes, and those four or five minutes cost us games. It’s been happening all year.
“We’re young, but at this point in the season, that’s no excuse. We can’t put complete periods together, let alone complete games, and it comes down to the simplest of things, and they’re just not doing it.”
Both teams will be in action Thursday at the Pavilion. The Big Reds will play Northern at 6:15 p.m., while the Vikings will play Berkley at 8:15 p.m.
