COCOA BEACH — After a sluggish, scoreless first half that featured six punts, Holy Trinity running back Jashaun Corbin rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the second half to pace the Tigers to a hard-fought 24-13 victory against Cocoa Beach Friday night at Minutemen Stadium.
Corbin finished with 175 rushing yards on 18 carries, including scoring runs of five and 70 yards. The sophomore has rushed for 596 yards and scored eight touchdowns for the season.
Fresh off a 32-24 upset of Melbourne Central Catholic last week, Holy Trinity (3-1) appeared to suffer a hangover after the win against their Class 3A rival.
“Last week was such an emotional game, our cross-town rival; I think it took a half before we realized we were in a football game,” said Tiger head coach Nate Hooks. “I told them at the half to play harder, play better, give more; be better than you were every play in the first half.”
Led by running back David Demeter’s 105 yards rushing, Cocoa Beach (1-4) played valiantly against Holy Trinity. The Minutemen took the early lead in the third quarter on quarterback Mitchell Machock’s 5-yard TD toss to running back Brantley Izzarelli. But the Tigers rebounded with TD runs from Corbin and quarterback Joc Perry to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Machock connected for a 20-yard scoring reception to Felipe Pires, who made a bobbling catch in the back of the end zone to cut the deficit to 16-13 with 6:31 remaining, but Corbin’s long TD run sealed the victory.
“(Corbin) is 6-foot, 184 pounds at 14, well he just turned 15,” said Hooks. “He’s so strong, he’s only been playing running back for two and a half games.“
Holy Trinity’s victory ties the series record at 5-5; Cocoa Beach’s last win was in 2008.
The Tigers are at Trinity Christian in Deltona Friday while the Minutemen host MCC in their 51st annual Homecoming. Both contests kickoff at 7 p.m.
