UNC Greensboro signed Bryce Hensley before he ever pitched an inning for Catawba Valley Community College.
The Spartans have to feel good about their investment for the future.
Hensley, who graduated from Reynolds in 2014, leads CVCC in strikeouts (41), and is tied for the most wins (four) of anyone on the Red Hawks’ staff. Hensley has a 2.11 earned-run average and has allowed only one home run in 47 innings pitched.
Hensley will finish out this year at CVCC before heading to Greensboro.
He was named last season’s Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 5-4 with a 1.24 earned-run average and 84 strikeouts in 62.1 innings. Hensley then helped the Asheville American Legion Post 70 team match a record for single-season wins (18) over the summer.
Hensley’s older brother, 2005 Owen graduate Steven Hensley, is a Triple-A pitcher in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization.
Steven Hensley, 28, has a career record of 34-33 with 11 saves in the minors, a 4.21 earned-run average and 482 strikeouts in 577 innings pitched. He was originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2008 major league draft.
Steven Hensley has since been with the Baltimore and Colorado organizations.
As a high school senior, Hensley had 153 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched for the Warhorses. He led them to the 2-A Western Regional championship.
