There was a lot emotion in Bishop Verot’s 34-16 homecoming victory over LaBelle on Friday night.
“I believe we have been playing since 1963,” Vikings head coach Bill Shields said. “Anytime these teams play you can throw away the records.”
It certainly looked that way early on as the Vikings (4-1, 2-0) only led at halftime 14-10 on the strength of a 43-yard Alex McDougall touchdown pass to Marcus Evans and Devon Thompkins’ 75-yard run. The Cowboys found the end zone on Marcellus Mitchell’s 80-yard kickoff return.
The tone though changed in the second half, as Bishop Verot’s Cooper Gibson took the kickoff 75 yards to LaBelle’s 25-yard line. Four plays later, Gibson crossed the goal line on a 17-yard run to put the Vikings up 20-10 in the third quarter.
Bishop Verot would then score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter; on McDougall’s 4-yard pass to Evans and a 3-yard plunge by Tristan Perry.
“This was an exciting week,” Gibson said. “We worked hard all week. We knew though (at halftime) that we had to get more pumped.”
LaBelle (2-3, 1-1) closed out the scoring on Tray Williams’ 3-yard run.
