PORT EDWARDS – It’s no secret that the Port Edwards boys basketball team runs it’s offense from the inside out.
With 6-foot-7 senior Jared Joslin in the paint, it’s a no-brainer.
However, when teams double- and triple-team him in the post, like Almond-Bancroft did, the Blackhawks are happy to shoot the 3. Port Edwards made 7 of 11 from 3-point range and came up with some key defensive stops to beat the Eagles 54-46 during Central Wisconsin Conference-10 action Tuesday.
“We like to get it to our big guy,” said Port Edwards freshman Addison Gibbs, who led all scorers with 20 points. “If Jared can’t score right away, he kicks it out to us and we’re ready on the 3-point line and we made some tonight.”
During a 90-second stretch in the second half, the Blackhawks went on a 12-0 run that included nine points from Gibbs and his sophomore brother Ian. That spurt put Port Edwards up 44-38 with 6:03 to play.
Down the stretch, Gibbs made 7 of 8 from the line, and 9 of 10 for the game proving to be unflappable under pressure.
“I just go up to the line and shoot,” Gibbs said. “Yes there is pressure, but when I look at the sideline and see my coaches and teammates supporting you it helps.”
Against a big athletic team like Almond-Bancroft, the seven-point lead quickly dwindled.
“Their pressure got to us late in the game and we showed our youth at that point,” Port Edwards coach Dave Gibbs said. “But we recovered and made our free throws.
“Almond is the model program in our conference and they have a super team.”
The Eagles defense forced 16 turnovers, nine in the second half, that helped cut Port Edwards’ lead and eventually tie the game at 44-44.
A-B was hot from 3-point range early in the game, but cooled down, making just 1 of 5 attempts in the second half.
“We shot too many 3s to be honest with you,” A-B coach Curt Lamb said. “We have have to get the ball into the post because we have size and strength and we didn’t do that enough tonight. At times we did, but we didn’t go inside enough.
“Right now, we have 12 guys who can play and the hard part is figuring out how to fit everyone together.”
