COLUMBIA – South Carolina defensive lineman Blake McClain has left the Gamecocks football team.
The 6-foot-3, 265 sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida did not participate in a game as a freshman due to a myriad of injuries. His status with the team was confirmed by the school Wednesday afternoon.
McClain signed with the Gamecocks after originally committing to Florida State. After de-committing, he committed to Nebraska. A week later he signed with USC.
He is the ninth player to leave the program since the end of the 2014 season.
USC coach Steve Spurrier said several players would probably transfer out of the program during a press availability prior to signing day.
When spring practice begins on March 17 the Gamecocks will welcome 31 new athletes, which means the team will have a much different look next season.
