He’s been with the Middletown South boys basketball program for a while, now he’s getting the chance to lead the Eagles this season.
Nick Georgiou was promoted from being the school’s freshman boys basketball coach to the Eagles head varsity coach for the 2015-2016 season.
He replaces former coach Kevin Cullen, who resigned to become the new Assistant Principal at the Bayshore Middle School in Middletown.
“This will be my first varsity head coaching job. I am an alumni of Middletown South, where I played for Coach Tom Murphy and was a captain,” Georgiou said. “I am also a graduate of TCNJ and now a guidance counselor at South.”
Georgiou was the freshman coach for seven seasons and was a varsity assistant to Cullen. He’s assembled his coaching staff and is ready to be on the bench for the Eagles on opening night, Dec. 18.
“I will be assisted this year by Joe Ventre at the JV level, and former Matwan head coach Tom Ryan at the Freshmen level,” Georgiou said. “This year, I anticipate us building on the defensive identity established by coach Cullen while looking to integrate our seniors and our up-and-coming underclassmen into an up-tempo offensive scheme.”
Georgiou inherts a program that went 8-19 overall and 4-10 in the Class A North division in the 2014-2015 season.
“We have a great group of players and coaches, and I am excited about the opportunity,” Georgiou said. “I feel that learning from Kevin Cullen for the past seven years has prepared me to come in and put a compelling and competitive product on the floor right away.”
Georgiou will make his coaching debut on Dec. 18 when the Eagles make a visit to Howell for a Class A North game.
