The Spackenkill High School boys basketball team closed out its senior night with a 57-52 squeaker over visiting Rhinebeck on Tuesday.
Rhinebeck hit four 3-pointers in the first half, but Spackenkill adjusted defensively, Spartans coach Tom Bell said, and held the Hawks without a long-distance score in the second half.
“The key to the game was taking away their three-point shot in the second half,” Bell said. “Camron Abalos guarded Eric Rodriguez in the second half and he did a great job on him.”
Senior Justin Etts had a team-best 17 points for Spackenkill (12-3). Abalos added 13 points and four steals. Joe Mills contributed nine points and Kyiev Bennermon had eight points and seven rebounds. Spackenkill honored Etts, along with fellow seniors Mills, Andrew Mwakibinga, Abe Haddad and Andrew Sahawneh before the game.
Jack Spencer led Rhinebeck with a game-high 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Rodriguez chipped in 14 points.
“They’re a solid team,” Bell said. “They’re going to be a tough out in the Class C (Section 9 tournament).”
Spackenkill travels to Highland Falls to face James I. O’Neill at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Rhinebeck visits Poughkeepsie at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
