This weekend, Beacon High School boys soccer coach Craig Seaman is going to do some homework.
He plans on studying Pearl River, Section 1 Class A’s top seed. All the preparation Seaman and his team must do for Monday’s quarterfinal game was made necessary by the eighth-seeded Bulldogs’ 2-1 win Friday over host Somers, the nine seed, in the opening round.
“I don’t know much about them (Pearl River),” said Seaman, whose Bulldogs improved to 11-6 with the win over Somers. “I’m going to call some coaches, get some information. I like our chances. We’ve got a good team, we’ll give it our best shot and see what happens.”
To reach the next round, Beacon received contributions from a number of players. Jason Antalek set up Jack Rothberg by heading the ball his way. Rothberg then delivered the goal off the assist in the first half. Devin Lambe then scored off a direct free kick, giving Beacon all it needed to claim victory.
“It was huge for us,” Seaman added. “We’ve been lucky in the first round the last few years. To go on the road and get a win was big, and the boys are obviously excited to be playing Monday. They’re looking forward to it.”
Keeper Declan Costello made three saves.
“He had a flurry of a couple great (saves) at the end,” Seaman said of Costello. “He came up really big.”
