Boys soccer #POTW: Mamaroneck's Alex Alma

Mamaroneck’s Alex Alma is the boys soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 5-Oct. 11.

There were reasonable questions about who would pick up the scoring slack for Mamaroneck this season. The Tigers were coming off of two of the best seasons in program history, and each year they had a dynamic finisher with a knack for clutch goals. In 2013, it was Nick Tunic, and last year, it was Juan Giraldo.

Giraldo and a host of others graduated after Mamaroneck’s trip to the Class AA final in 2014, leaving the Tigers with some glaring holes to fill. Some expected a bit of a drop-off, but with just over a week left in the regular season, it’s fair to say that Mamaroneck has maintained its lofty standards with a 9-2-1 record. And a big reason for that has been the emergence of Alex Alma.

The junior midfielder leads the team with 12 goals, including four this past week as the Tigers went 3-0. Alma scored in Mamaroneck’s 3-0 win over league rival White Plains on Monday to get the week started, but his biggest goal came against New Rochelle on Wednesday. The Huguenots tied the Tigers in their first meeting of the season, which meant that the second game would determine which team had an edge in a very competitive league. Alma was responsible for the lone goal in a 1-0 win. For good measure, he added two goals in an impressive 4-0 win over Pelham on Saturday.

“Alex has shown tremendous growth over the past year,” coach Rich Becker said. “He has become an impact player for our team this year. He is doing a great job of filling the shoes of last year’s talent. He is growing as a leader with each match that he plays with the Tigers.”

Others who were considered include Tappan Zee’s James Hennessy, YMA’s Nery Gomez, White Plains’ Franco DeGuevara, Briarcliff’s Alex Jacobs, Edgemont’s Drew Simon, Lincoln’s Valmend Marki, Rye Neck’s Reed Peterson, Clarkstown North’s Cole Spagnoli, Riverside’s Franco Gutierrez, Hastings’ Jackson Silverstein, Yorktown’s Enzo Sangiacomo and Peekskill’s Oswald Annang.
