After a rainout Thursday forced the match to Friday, the Beacon High School boys tennis team started its season with a 6-1 loss to visiting Somers.
Beacon coach Dave Ryley said preparing for opening day was difficult, on account of the lingering winter weather conditions.
“It’s definitely been a tough preseason, with snow and ice on the courts,” Ryley said. “We’ve barely been outside.”
Jack Rothberg scored the lone win for Beacon at first singles. He lost the first set, but bounced back to take the second set and win the tiebreaker.
“He showed a lot of guts and perseverance to pull out the win,” Ryley said of Rothberg.
The second doubles team of Ryan Strong and Kellen Sela lost a three-set match, however Ryley said they played “very well.”
“In almost every match, we got stronger as we went along,” Ryley said.
The Bulldogs (0-1) will be off for spring break next week and resume the season on Monday, April 6 at 4:30 p.m. against John Jay at home. Beacon will have four matches in five days that week, also visiting Carmel (April 7), hosting North Salem (April 8) and hosting Hendrick Hudson (April 10).
