Former Irvington point guard and state champion Brittni Lai is expected to transfer out of Marist for her junior year, along with three other teammates, according to The Poughkeepsie Journal’s Mike Benischek.
Marist posted a press release announcing that Lai, Maddie Blais (junior), Kat Fogarty (sophomore) and Payton Birchmeier (freshman) were all transferring out of the Poughkeepsie-based school.
“I am disappointed that Payton, Maddie, Kat and Brittni have decided to leave our women’s basketball program,” head coach Brian Giorgis said in the statement. “They are all great students who worked very hard to represent Marist well on and off the court. I want to wish them well as they begin a new chapter.”
Lai, who graduated from Irvington in 2013, went from one winning program to another in Marist. At the time of her enrollment with the Red Foxes, Marist had already won eight consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles. Marist won a ninth straight title during Lai’s rookie season, then lost in this year’s final to Quinnipiac, 72-61.
The question now remains, where will Lai go? Before committing to Marist, the 5-foot-6 guard received offers from Boston University, Drexel, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris and St. Joseph’s, according to Yahoo! Sports Rivals.
Lai averaged 21.4 minutes per game this season with the Red Foxes, playing in all 32 games while averaging 4.4 PPG, 2.7 RPG and 2.7 APG.
