Brian Gaffney had quite the opening round at the PGA Championship, firing a 1-under 71 at Whistling Straits and popping up on the first two pages of the leaderboard at various times during the day.

The Quaker Ridge head pro made seven birdies, six pars, four bogeys and one double. He was the leading club pro after Day 1.

Grant Sturgeon ran into trouble on the Straits Course par 3s and wound up shooting a 5-over 77.

The Winged Foot assistant had a pair of double bogeys – on No. 17 and No. 7 and played the shortest holes on the course in 5-over. He also made three birdies and four bogeys.
