Brooks, Redmen gallivant to duel win over Pine View

The Cedar Redmen took down the Pine View Panthers after attaining timely pins for a 38-32 final score.

Perennial wrestling superstar Dallin Brooks brought down Pine View’s Korey Barlow in the first period of the 170-weight class match. Brooks shot into Barlow with a single-leg takedown and then finished off the win with a pin.

“I come out and pound the head,” Brooks said. “Once I do that (my opponents) think I’ll do the same thing and try to take them down from the head. Then I sink down and get the leg.”

Brooks’ victory came in the third match of the duel. Cedar’s Wade Roche pinned Pine View’s John Tai two matches later in the 195-weight class. It took Roche a couple tries, though.

Tai held off a pin at the end of the first period in a near fall that lasted about 30 seconds. Roche just couldn’t get Tai’s last shoulder blade onto the mat. The two went into the second period where Roche finally finished him off for the pin and a 16-7 lead for Cedar.

In the 220-weight class, Cedar’s Koalman Kimber pinned Pine View’s Jake Vlahovich with a half nelson finishing move. Sandon Stokes pinned Pine View’s Christian Oili when the duel flipped to the lightweights at 106. And Jace Roundy pinned Gavin Sutton in 132 to give the Redmen a commanding lead at 38-23.

Pine View won the last two matches in 138 and 145. Jaden Peterson defeated Dallin Groves in 138, and Liam Williams beat Kendrick Smith in 145. However, Cedar had already built a large enough lead to keep the Panthers from coming back for the win.

Cedar took its first lead of the duel with a win by McCrae Murray over Brenr Nelson in the 182-weight class. Murray went into the second period with a 2-1 lead, and then he exploded for a 12-2 win.

He tried a few moves Thursday that didn’t work, he said, but the Delta worked well for him.

“The Delta is one of my good moves,” Murray said. “I did well putting pressure forward.”

Murray said the season has gone well as its progressed, and trying out new moves against the Panthers helped even more to preparation.

“I’ve had a lot of good progress,” Murray said. “I wrestle against (Dallin Brooks) in practice, so that’s made a difference.”

The night rounded out with a win by decision for Hunter Williams (Pine View) over Eric Olsen (Cedar). Isaiah Johnson (PV) defeated Jadon Beazer by decision, 13-4 in 160. Randall Dorn (Pine View) pinned Conner Butterfield (Cedar) in 113. Drew Hansen (Pine View) beat Caleb Weaver (Cedar) by decision, 12-1.

Tyler Barrick (Cedar) did all he could to try and get a pin against Ben Worlton (Pine View) in 126, but a three-point near fall as time expired was the closest he got — a 13-4 win by decision.
