Eagles veteran girls basketball head coach steps down after 20th season
KUSA — The Broomfield Eagles girls basketball team has seen its share of success since head coach, Mike Croell, joined the program in 1995-96.
Ever since taking over 20 years ago, the Eagles have made an appearance in the Great 8 every single season, advanced to the Final Four 13 times, appeared in eight state title games and won five straight championships from 2007-’11.
Coach Croell’s overall record with Broomfield is 454-69 (45-7 in postseason) which amounts to a winning percentage of 86.81.
Croell has left a legacy for the Broomfield Eagles and after 20 seasons as their head coach, he will step down to become a basketball dad rather than a basketball coach.
This year his team is having great success once again, finishing the regular season with a 22-2 overall record and just cruised into another Final Four appearance after beating Lakewood 65-39. What’s makes this feat even more impressive is the fact that this is the Eagles first year in 5A.
While Croell hasn’t necessarily ruled out a return to coaching, one thing is for sure. He’s one of the best coaches this state has ever seen, and seeing him win his sixth state title with the Eagles in his final season would be a great ending to this chapter…for now.
