Hayesville senior Amanda Thompson is among Western North Carolina’s career rebounding leaders with more than 1,000.
But she does a lot more for the Big Smoky Mountain Conference champion Yellow Jackets (18-6, 11-1).
Thompson is the latest Citizen-Times/Western North Carolina Basketball Player of the Week for girls, while Roberson freshman Raishaun Brown is the boys winner.
Thompson had 26 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks, five steals and three assists in a 62-43 home win over Robbinsville on Feb. 10 that clinched the outright BSMC championship. The Mercer (Ga.) recruit averages 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds a game for Hayesville, which is the top seed in this week’s BSMC tournament at Andrews.
Brown is only a ninth grader but led the Rams (7-16, 2-10) to their first Mountain Athletic Conference wins of the season last week – Feb. 10 (54-44 over Reynolds) and Feb. 13 (77-75 over Enka).
Brown exploded for a career-high 34 points against the Jets, with 11 of those points coming in overtime and double overtime. He also had five assists, four rebounds and a steal.
Against the Rockets, Brown had 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and a steal.
Honorable mention for this week’s boys award goes to Erwin’s Alic Wynn, West Henderson’s Sam Polovina, McDowell’s Quante Henry, Asheville High’s Cameron Ray, North Henderson’s Ryan Decker and Roberson’s Patrick Barker who were also nominated by Citizen-Times readers.
Franklin’s Vanessa Agrusa, Erwin’s Mariah Reid and McDowell’s Kassie Brackett were also nominated for the girls honor.
Two players (one boy and one girl) are selected every week by the Citizen-Times, and readers may take part in the process by nominating players who they think are deserving (please note that number of votes cast will not necessarily determine the winners).
Nominations may be made prior to Monday at noon by sending an e-mail to email@example.com. The name of the person making the nomination will be kept confidential.
