Former pro player served as assistant coach for Garfield Heights’ boys basketball team in 2014-15
South Euclid-Lyndhurst Schools Superintendent Linda N. Reid and athletic administrator Mike Murphy announced on Tuesday that the district, pending board approval next week, has hired Chester “Chet” Mason as its next boys basketball coach.
A prolific prep, college and pro hoops player, Mason served as an assistant coach and the player development coordinator for Garfield Heights’ boys basketball team this past season.
The Associated Press Mr. Basketball winner in 2000, Mason starred at Cleveland South and led the Flyers to a Senate League championship and a Division I regional final appearance as a senior.
After earning first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors as a senior at Miami University, Mason played professionally for 11 seasons.
Mason’s playing career saw him spend extensive time in Europe, but he continued to give back to his hometown through his Chet Mason Foundation. He has hosted free inner-city youth basketball camps, sponsored a free summer reading program and a fight-hunger program that feeds 1,000 families each summer.
