CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Devin Christian and Andrew Walter missed out on Centerville’s season-opening 19-run parade.
Both were back in the lineup for Round 2, and they wasted little time making their impact in the second game of the Bulldogs’ doubleheader Saturday against Seton Catholic.
Christian got the offense going with a 1-out triple and finished a home run shy of the cycle, while Walter added a two-run triple of his own later in the inning as the Bulldogs scored 10 runs en route to a 23-1 Game 2 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals.
The Bulldogs batted around five times on the day, including three times in the 19-6 Game 1 victory.
“We just have a rule that over spring break, if you leave for spring break, you miss some practices that you have to sit out a ballgame and they were just sitting out a ballgame because they weren’t here for some of the practices for spring break,” Centerville coach Tracey Crull said. “But they came back in the second game after they sat out one and they’re a big part of our team. … I think we hit up and down the lineup all day.”
Christian was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and scored four runs. Walter was 2-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and scored three runs.
The Bulldogs had 23 hits on the day, including three each from Nolan Witte, Ricky Torres, Justyn North and Blake Shook; two from Matt Stamper, Walter and Logan Moistner and one each from Sam Shaw and Josh Morgan.
Witte, Torres, Stamper, Moistner and Morgan each had three RBIs; North had two and Shook one; North and Stamper each scored six runs, Witte and Shaw scored five; Shook scored four; Morgan and Torres scored three and Moistner two.
Moistner also had a triple in the first game, while Stamper doubled.
“I think the biggest thing was, after spring break, normally we have a game the first week back,” Walter said. “This week we didn’t have a game, so we had a whole extra week of practice, so we got a lot of extra hitting in, a lot of fielding and we were a lot more ready than the past seasons we have been.”
Centerville actually trailed in the first game after a pair of walks and an error gave the Cardinals the early 1-0 advantage, but a nine-run second started a span of 28 batters sent to the plate in the next three innings.
North and Shaw each pitched two innings in the victory, while North struck out six and Shaw four. Witte pitched three innings in Game 2, striking out five and Tyler Phenis pitched a scoreless fifth inning with a strikeout.
“I think our pitching was pretty good, really happy with the two freshmen that pitched the second game. They threw strikes all day and we have a couple other arms that didn’t get to throw today that we’ll get to throw this week, so all-in-all good day of baseball,” Crull said.
For Seton, Jake Leverton doubled in Game 1, while Vince Mosey, Chris Easley, Cliff Dickman, Ivan Fox and Trey Bartkus each had a single on the day.
Centerville travels Monday to Monroe Central, while Seton is at Hagerstown Tuesday.
“We made some mental mistakes,” Seton coach Jake Carr said. “We have a really young team, one senior, and it’s the senior who hasn’t played in two years in Jacob Rogers, and so a lot of the kids’ first varsity experience. I think we were a little bit tight and a little bit nervous, and you could definitely tell early on.
“Positives, I guess we batted pretty well. We battled and some guys who didn’t get playing time, even that were returners from last year hit the ball well today, so there’s some positives, but we definitely have a lot of work to get done.”
