Byrd clinched the District 1-5A title for a second consecutive season on Friday when the Lady Jackets defeated Parkway.
The team wasn’t expected to dominate in the toughest area district going in with the absences from last season’s title team.
“We lost Tara Schuler, Shelby Spruiell and Sarah Long, three seniors who provided good leadership, off last year’s team,” Byrd coach Mark Lambert said. “So we had to have several people step up and fill those roles. We had several who did that.”
The Lady Jackets (17-10, 11-0) played St. Amant, Dutchtown, Walker and East Ascension early in the season, going 1-3, but the team learned a lot.
“We were pitching well and playing good defense early, but we weren’t hitting well,” Lambert said. “Callie Crandall’s ERA was 8-something, but it’s down to 2.01 now. That tells you something.”
Among the top hitters on the club are Morgan McInnis (.387), Hannah Lee (.344), Chandler Higgins (.333), Claire Hyde (.282) and Tia Timerding (.277). Hyde has a team high 22 RBIs.
“With the pitching we’ve faced, having three over .300 is pretty good,” Lambert said. “We are a junior-heavy team with 11 juniors, so we’ve been growing as we go.”
Byrd is due to host Haughton at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Haughton is No. 23 and Byrd is No. 24 in the latest unofficial LHSAA Power Ratings.

The rain wreaked havoc with the early part of the 2015 softball season and the same has happened again in the closing days of the regular season.
Airline had games rained out on Monday and Tuesday and the Lady Vikings are hoping to get in their District 1-5A finale with Parkway on Wednesday, the last playing date. A non-district contest with North DeSoto won’t get played.
“We have to have all scores in by 10 p.m. Wednesday,” Airline coach Reggie Digilormo said.
“If we can get our game in with Parkway on Tuesday, we’ll be set to go.”
