LITTLE EGG HARBOR Donovan Catholic running back David Calderon had 15 carries in Friday night’s football game against host Pinelands.
But no carry was more important than the last time he touched the ball and that came with 2:28 left. At that pivotal moment, Calderon found a gap and sprinted into the end zone to give Donovan Catholic the lead. Donovan Catholic quarterback Teddy Golubowski then completed a conversion pass to Dezmund Hunter and the Griffins now led 39-33.
Pinelands would get the ball back for one final drive. But that drive, which started at the Pinelands 16-yard line, stalled just 14 yards later and the Wildcats would turn the ball over on downs with 39.5 seconds left.
Donovan Catholic’s Golubowski ‘s then sealed the victory by taking a knee to run the clock out as the Griffins held on for the victory.
“ We had to get points on the board because they were up,” Calderon said. “I tried to find the hole and I saw everyone shift, so I saw the middle (open) and I just took it.”
Prior to Calderon’s game-winning play, Pinelands led 33-31 and Donovan Catholic faced a first and 10 at the Pinelands 14-yard line. Calderon then took his 15 carry into the end zone to give him 136 yards for the game. That play also capped a 12-play, 87-yard drive that started with 8:41 left and finished with 2:28 left.
“They (Pinelands) are tough team and I give them credit. Their defense was really good,” Calderon said. “But on that play, I had the mindset that I was going to help our team win. The offensive lineman took care of their assignments and I just ran in.”
That pivotal play was Calderon’s second touchdown run of the game. In the first quarter, he broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run to give Donovan Catholic a 14-7 lead with 6:35 left in the first quarter.
The game went back and forth from that point until midway in the fourth when Pinelands took its last lead as running back Justin Kirkpatrick (nine carries, 158 yards) finished off a six-play, 67-yard drive with a 44-yard touchdown run with 8:42 left.
But that was too much time left and Donovan Catholic answered with the game-winning drive on its next possession.
