Calico Rock’s senior high teams both clinched regional tournament berths with victories in the first round of the 1A-2 North District Tournament on Wednesday night at Brockwell.

The Pirates — holding the No. 6 seed — upset the No. 3 seed Hillcrest Screamin’ Eagles in a 63-31 rout. Brett James tossed in 20 points to lead Calico Rock (14-14), while Bryan Parnell added 19 and Logan Sherrell found double figures with 15. Hillcrest was led by Dylan Nunnally with 15 points.

No. 4 seed Mammoth Spring knocked off No. 5 Viola 32-26 without placing a player in double-figure scoring.

Logan Skaggs led the Bears with nine points, while Elijah Griggs scored 12 to lead Viola (19-16), which saw its season come to an end. Mammoth Spring led 8-7 after one quarter, Viola took a 15-13 halftime lead, and the teams were tied 22-22 after three.

The Lady Pirates claimed a 55-42 victory over Hillcrest after using a 24-8 third-quarter advantage.

Erin Sherrell scored 17 points to lead the Lady Pirates, while Kelsey Fry added 16 and Katie Hamby notched 12. Katelyn Richey led Hillcrest with 13 points and Natalie Cox added 12.

Calico Rock led 13-11 after one, but Hillcrest surged ahead 26-16 at halftime with a 15-3 second-quarter run. The Lady Pirates rebounded for a 40-34 lead after three.
