Carroll made their living for most of the Don Redden Memorial Classic with its potent inside game.
Well, for most of “The Redden.’’
Coming off a loss to Rayville in the final minute, the Bulldogs (9-9) regrouped and beat rival Wossman 60-47, finished third overall in the tournament.
“We’ve still got our heads down a little bit from last night,” Carroll head coach Jesse Burnette said. “It’s kind of like kissing your sister but we were able to stay focused somewhat and get a win.”
Larry Owens scored the opening points of the game on a nice feed inside from Amari Davis, but Carroll settled for jump shots most of the first half against Wossman’s 2-3 zone.
The C-Dogs made just enough to lead by five at the end of the first quarter.
Six points from Ladarrius ‘L.T.’ Thomas pulled the Wildcats (6-11) within a point at the 1:35-mark of the second quarter before Carroll was able to scrap together some offense before the half.
Jerrell Gundy hit a 3, followed by a bucket from Owens on the next possession that made the score 28-22 Carroll going into the locker room.
Gundy’s hot shooting continued in the second half, knocking down three more 3s that put Carroll up double-digits.
Things opened up inside in the fourth for Owens and Amari Davis, who combined for 10 in the final quarter to help put the game away.
Gundy finished with 16 points and Owens 14. Thomas also posted double-figures for Wossman with 16.
Ruston tops Franklin Parish in consolation finals
Bakari Beckwith is still getting some guys up to speed as Ruston prepares for the always competitive District 2-5A slate.
But it does help to have an old hand back. And a big one at that.
Isaiah Buggs’ 20 points led the way for Ruston as the Bearcats (10-4) beat Franklin Parish 67-64 in the Don Redden consolation finals.
“He was second team all-state last year so we expect a lot out of him,” Beckwith said. “We were a little out of sync without two starters but we’ll get there.”
Buggs was responsible for most of Ruston’s offense in the first quarter with six points. Franklin Parish turned a six-point Bearcat lead into a one possession game after a Jontavius Allen 3 with under a minute left in the quarter.
Beckwith sent Terrance Dodson in off the bench in the second quarter and he ignited the Ruston offense with six points. The Bearcats stretched the scoring out on a 9-3 run that built a 29-16 lead.
Franklin Parish proved it had a run in them as well before the half behind the scoring of Allen and Tyler Bush. DeShumbra Jones’ successful layup after curling to the basket put the Patriots (10-8) within six at the half.
Buggs went back to work in the third quarter, scoring eight along with Price Jackson’s 3-point shooting that put Ruston up 10. Franklin Parish once again refused to stay down though and got the lead back to single digits on a successful DeAndre McCarthy ‘‘And-1’’ at the buzzer.
Ruston continued going through Buggs in the fourth quarter, but Greg Atkins knocked down a 3 to pull Franklin Parish within three.
Buggs and Jackson put the game away down the stretch, going 3-for-4 at the free throw line.
