Carson had a tremendous football season in 2014, going 9-3, but capped by a disappointing loss to Reed in the Northern Division Region championship.
This year, some of the Senators say that loss is the driving factor to do better. Others, namely coach Blair Roman, have put that loss in the past.
“I really didn’t have a bitter taste, as weird as that sounds. Obviously, we were disappointed we didn’t win,” Roman said. “I felt the kids left it on the field. The coaches did the best job they could, we just came up a little short.”
Asa Carter, the Senators speedy and elusive back/safety, is motivated by the 28-25 loss to the Raiders. Carson will get a chance to avenge the loss when it opens the season at 7 p.m Aug. 29 against Reed at Mackay Stadium, the second game of a football doubleheader. Galena faces Lassen at 4 p.m that day.
Roman is not placing too much emphasis on the opener, saying it is simply measuring stick to see how the Senators stack up.
“It’s not our whole season, it’s the first game of the year. You can’t base your whole season off just the first game,” Roman said.
Senior linebacker Ikela Lewis is driven by that loss.
“That’s our main motivation this year, is to get ourselves to a level where we’ll be able to compete for a championship. We’ve been knocking at the door for so many years, it would be nice actually take it,” Lewis said.
If practice is any indication, the Senators are ready to play now as they display energy and enthusiasm throughout, loudly yelling every time coaches change drills.
Carson has eight starters back on offense, including Carter and quarterback Joe Nelson, who took over at QB in the sixth game last year, and five starters back on defense.
