CBA team captures indoor rowing title

Student rowers representing Christian Brothers Academy captured their fourth straight title at the Greenhead Sprints indoor rowing regatta on Saturday in Bragantine.

CBA took home the boys high school championship trophy, while Holy Spirit High School won the girls championship crown.

CBA clocked an average boat speed of 6:43.9, while Holy Spirit recorded an average speed of 7:47.9.

The top three finishers in each championship category – freshmen, lightweight, junior varsity and varsity – also won individual medals.

In the event, sponsored by the Brigantine Rowing Club, high school rowing coaches each put together an eight-member crew to represent their schools in the championship competition—two athletes from their varsity, junior varsity, lightweight and freshman crews. They raced 2,000 meters on Concept II ergometers, or rowing machines. The boat speed of each eight was determined by averaging together the times of its rowers. The two fastest crews—one for boys and one for girls— won trophies for their schools.

A total of 545 athletes participated in the Greenhead Sprints, which were held in the Brigantine North Elementary School. High school crews came from Absegami, Atlantic City, Cedar Creek, the Christian Brothers Academy, Egg Harbor Township, Friends Select School in Philadelphia, Holy Spirit, Mainland, Oakcrest, Ocean City, Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, St. Augustine Prep, St. Joseph Prep of Philadelphia, and Vineland. Athletes in the team events—including coxswains—also raced for medals in their categories.

The Greenhead Sprints raises funds for the Brigantine Rowing Club, which sponsors youth, high school and adaptive rowing programs in the summer. The event provides an opportunity for high school crews to test themselves before for the spring scholastic racing season. The results are as follows:
