The intrigue continues around the prospect of CeCe Jefferson, Byron Cowart and Jeffrey Holland deciding to attend the same school.
Jefferson told First Coast News in Jacksonville that the three players got together on their official visit to Auburn last weekend and decided they wanted to go to college together.
Jefferson is a five-star defensive end from Baker County Senior from Glen Saint Mary, Fla. Cowart is a five-star defensive end from Armwood in Seffner, Fla., is considered the No. 1 prospect in the nation by ESPN.com. Holland is a four-star linebacker from Trinity Christian in Jacksonville, Fla.
“In order to change a program you can’t do it alone,” Jefferson told Gannett partner First Coast News in Jacksonville. “You have to have great guys coming in with you and willing to help work and have the same mindset as you and change the program. So we trust each other and we just came to the conclusion that if we are going to go in with anybody why not be us three.”
On Wednesday, Cowart told ESPN.com that he was down to two schools — Florida and Auburn. That follows an interview after he was named the No. 1 prospect in the final ESPN 300 for the Class of 2015 during which he was wearing Florida State shorts and a lanyard. Jefferson wore a Florida State sweater in another interview, although the Seminoles were not among his top five.
“I just want people to know that I’m man enough to say ‘thank you for recruiting me, but I might not go to your school,’ ” Cowart said. “But right now, truly, it will come down to Auburn and Florida. That’s just being honest.”
Cowart is scheduled to visit Florida this weekend.
He is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida State on Jan. 30, but that may now be in question as well. Cowart met with FSU coaches on Wednesday.
“It’s just crazy. I just want to relax and get away, think and get my thoughts together, and that’s why I was like I don’t know if I’m going to do my last visit.”
Jefferson told the Montgomery Advertiser that he has plans to take an unofficial visit to Ole Miss this weekend and a official visit to LSU on Jan. 30. He also had a visit with Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze and defensive line coach Chris Kiffin this week.
He posted photos of himself with the Auburn coaching staff during his visit, including former Florida head coach Will Muschamp, now the Auburn defensive coordinator.
Either Auburn or Florida seems to be the leader for Holland. He had developed a close relationship with Muschamp when Muschamp was recruiting him for Florida.
