The Cincinnati Shoot-Out José Cerdá Memorial Water Polo Tournament will take place July 10-12. This double tournament for girls and boys is held in honor of José Cerdá, a former Sycamore HS and Moose Club water polo player who passed away during a swimming practice on October 26, 2010, his 18th birthday.
The event, now in its fifth year, was the first U-18 Club Tournament of its kind established in Ohio and has become one of the largest summer tournaments in the Midwest. Twenty two boys’ teams from Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio and six girls’ teams from these last three states will compete in pools at the University of Cincinnati vying for the girls and boys championship titles.
Coach Nick Hellwig, organizer of this tournament, continues to show his commitment to grow the sport of water polo and enable a perpetual tribute to José. The José Cerdá Aquatic Foundation (JCAF), a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization established in memory of José Cerdá, is proud to support the Cincinnati Shoot-Out José Cerdá Memorial Tournament. In the spirit of practicing José’s lifestyle of giving selflessly to others, JCAF has contributed $16,000 in equipment and pool rental expenses over the five years of the tournament.
The mission of the JCAF is helping swimming and water polo teams improve competitiveness of their athletes and fostering unity across teams. JCAF is able to support this and other programs thanks to countless volunteers and the generosity of many individual and business donors. On-line monetary contributions to support this noble cause can be made on the Foundation’s website http://www.jcafoundation.org or in the Memorial website http://www.joseito.webs.com. Checks payable to JCAF can be mailed to JCAF P.O. Box 12918, Cincinnati, OH 45212.
