Cherokee, Hiwassee Dam girls agree to game

Girls basketball teams from Cherokee and Hiwassee Dam may cross paths deep in the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs.

But they won’t have to wait that long.

The two Smoky Mountain Conference schools have agreed to a Feb. 7 game at Cherokee.

The varsity girls will play at 7 p.m., following a junior-varsity girls matchup at 5:30. There will be no boys games that night.

Cherokee (17-0, 8-0) and Hiwassee Dam (18-1, 3-0) were originally scheduled to play in late-December, but the game was postponed.

“We’ve been trying to make it happen for about a month now,” Braves coach Chris Mintz said.

“It’s going to be good for both teams.”

Cherokee and Hiwassee Dam are first and second, respectively, in this week’s MaxPreps computer-generated rankings for NCHSAA 1-A girls. They are both one spot lower in the NCPreps.com/state media poll.

The Braves are the first-place team in the Big Smoky Mountain Conference, while the Eagles are undefeated in the Little Smoky Mountain Conference.

“I think it’ll be a big game for both teams and our communities,” Hiwassee Dam coach Ray Gutierrez said.

“One reason we scheduled it was to get a feel for the playoffs. Cherokee has been there, but we haven’t. We want to prepare our girls and hopefully there will be many more big games like this (in the future).”
