Christ Church claims Upper State title in boys tennis

With a victory in Wednesday’s Class AA/A boys tennis Upper State championship match, Christ Church improved to 10-8.

“Our record is not that stellar, but we’ve been all over North Carolina playing the best,” Cavaliers coach Bobby Austell said. “That’s what it’s all about. Then it makes this not tough and gets us ready for Saturday.”

Christ Church defeated visiting Southside Christian 5-2 to win its sixth consecutive Upper State title.

The Cavaliers will play the winner of today’s Bishop England-Waccamaw match in the state final at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.

Christ Church already has a South Carolina-record 24 state championships.

This season, four of Christ Church’s losses have come against highly competitive North Carolina opponents. The other four have come against in-state teams that made up half of the final eight in the Class AAAA playoffs.

For the Cavaliers Wednesday, Julian Gallus was victorious at No. 2; Jackson Houser at No. 3; Robert Philpot at No. 4; and Walker Carroll at No. 5.

Christ Church’s No. 2 doubles team of Preston Freeman and Chase Garrett also posted a victory.

Southside Christian (6-3) won at No. 1 singles (Timothy Pitts) and No. 1 doubles (Pitts and David Noe).

Third-year Sabres coach Karin Collom directed the Sabres to the playoffs for the first time in five yeears.

“You don’t have to be the best tennis player or coach,” Collom said. “You’ve just got to be able to talk your kids into winning. You just have to encourage them, and they can believe they can win. I really believe that. They’ve done great. I’m really proud of them.”

Both teams are young. Among their first five, Christ Church has seniors at No. 2 and No. 5, SCS at No. 2.

“And I gain at least two seventh-graders that play to the caliber of my No. 1 player,” Collom said.
