Beginning in the 2016-17 school year, CHSAA will use RPI to determine playoff fields in all team sports.

RPI is taking over high school sports in Colorado.

The Colorado High School Activities Association announced Monday that a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) will be used to determine playoff fields for all team sports, beginning with the 2016-17 school year.

The RPI formula means a teams ranking is based 25 percent on the team’s winning percentage, 50 percent on the winning percentage of their opponents and 25 percent on the winning percentage of their opponents’ opponents.

The committee of each sport will have the option of adding additional contingencies, such as football, which has already elected to guarantee league champions a playoff berth.

The change was adopted by CHSAA’s Board of Directors in a meeting on Saturday. CHSAA is still working on how opponents in a different classification will impact a teams RPI rating.
