NEW ROCHELLE – Due to a technicality when the seeds were being assigned for the Section 1 Class AA tournament, New Rochelle was given the fourth over North Rockland, even though both coaches expected and felt the seeds should have been flipped.
So Wednesday’s quarterfinal was played in New Rochelle, not Thiells.
Following the 62-51 win over the hosts — a win that avenged a season-ending loss from last season and sent the Red Raiders to the County Center for the first time under Kevin Metcalf — the first words out of Metcalf were to praise New Rochelle coach Bruce Daniele and his team.
“I’ve got nothing but respect for Bruce and New Rochelle,” said Metcalf, sporting a red monogrammed “NR” tie. “When the mixup occurred with the seedings, from Day 1 he’s been telling his (athletic director), my AD, and (Section 1 executive director) Jen Simmons that he should be playing over at my place.
“If he could’ve, he told me before the game he would’ve. He’s written emails, he’s sent texts; so to me, that’s the mark of a gentleman and a true sportsman.”
Senior Olivia Burden paced the Red Raiders (17-3) with 20 points, but it was classmate Ciera Rivera who had the big night, recording her 1,000th career point in the second quarter. Rivera was presented with a bouquet of flowers prior to the start of the third quarter.
“It feels great because we’ve never gotten this far before; we’ve always been so close,” said Rivera, who is the fourth player in school history to reach the milestone. “We hung in there; we played our hardest game. I think it was one of our best games.”
North Rockland’s Ciera Rivera drives on New Rochelle’s Dominique Darius during their Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal at New Rochelle Feb. 18, 2015. North Rockland won 62-51. Rivera scored her 1,000th point during the game.
Kayla Correa led the Huguenots (16-4) with 16 points, despite second-half foul trouble.
