There were City High and West High, and then everyone else.
Both area teams headlined Class 2A singles and doubles girls tennis regionals Thursday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City.
City’s Eve Small and Innes Hiczamas qualified for the state tournament in singles as each advanced to the finals. Small defeated Hiczamas 6-1, 6-3. Megan Jans and Abby Jans of West High qualified for state as a doubles pair, as did Susanna Gianola and Bihotza James of City. The Jans sisters defeated Gianola and James in the final match 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
City coach Fred Pedersen was pleased with his team.
“The girls competed hard today. I think it will help them with experience as we go further on in competition and as the team event goes on,” Pedersen said. “That will help a lot.”
The Little Hawks will play Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Saturday in North Scott in a team regional second-round meet. West goes against Ottumwa in Cedar Rapids, also in the second round.
There will quite a bit of local flavor at state singles and doubles, no matter what happens in the team round.
“There’s some good teams here today, so I was a little nervous,” West coach Amie Villarini said. “I’m happy we qualified. You can’t take it for granted, and we don’t. It’s always very exciting to make it.”
