The TSSAA Class A-AA Golf Championships will begin Tuesday at WillbowBrook Golf Club in Manchester, where 35 Midstate golfers will tee off for a chance at taking home a state title.
The boys teams from Christ Presbyterian Academy and Lipscomb will be competing for Class A-AA team championships, along with the CPA and Clarksville Academy girls teams.
The CPA boys, led by Region 6 A-AA champion Luke Zieman, will be aiming to win their second straight state championship and third in program history.
Zieman, a junior, shot 73 in last week’s region tournament at Old Natchez Country Club. He finished third in the individual standings at state a season ago, carding a two-day score of 142 (-2). Teammate Grayson Davis, a senior, is also returning to WillowBrook after firing a nine-over 153 last year.
Lipscomb, coming off its third Region 5 A-AA title in four years, also has some state tournament experience on its roster. Last year as a junior, Davis Armstrong finished tied for 12th with an 8-over 152, while teammate Paul Swindell placed 17th at 156 (+12).
On the girls side, CPA will be looking to improve on last year’s runner-up finish, while Lady Lions junior Siarra Stout aims defend her 2014 Class A-AA individual title. Stout, the reigning Tennessean Girls Golfer of the Year, shot three-over 147 for the tournament last year, edging Milan’s Arianna Clemmer by five strokes.
Clarksville Academy, making its second straight state tournament appearance, finished seventh a season ago after shooting 366 (+66) for the tournament.
Jo Byrns’ Nick Henderson, Cascade’s Tyler Huff and Stewart County’s Patrick Craig will each be returning to WillowBrook after competing for individual state titles last year. Other Midstate boys competing as individuals this week include DeKalb County’s Austin Pass and Isaac Walker, Goodpasture’s Jay Fox, MLK’s Oliver Gore, Marshall County’s Wilson Limbaugh and Zach Smith, Houston County’s Morgan Robinson and Cheatham County’s Ryan Mahaney.
Eleven area girls will be among this week’s individual field, including Lipscomb’s Christina Vetvong, Lewis County’s Olivia Hinson, Hickman County’s Madison Smith, Cheatham County’s Mallory Anderson, Livingston Academy’s Maggie Vaughn, Creek Wood’s Cindy Williams, Central Magnet’s Delaney Sain, MLK’s Zoe Robinson and Pickett County’s Sydne Denney.
Vetvong shot 21-over 165 in last year’s state tournament, finishing in seventh place.
