From the archives of fantastic history comes this letter, which was authored by the one and only Mike Krzyzewski.
Evidently Coach K has a history of writing heart-felt letters to recruits who jilted Duke. In 1980, that group included one Michael Jordan, the Laney High star from Wilmington who would go on to star at North Carolina, Duke’s arch rival.
Nonetheless, Coach K went out of his way to wish MJ the best of luck, and even told him he would, “make an immediate impact on whatever you choose.” Talk about a class act.
Of course, at North Carolina Jordan was a particular thorn in the side of Krzyzewski’s squads during his three years in Chapel Hill. Sure, Duke won Jordan’s final matchup against the Blue Devils, in the ACC conference tournament semifinals, but he still led all scorers with 22 points. Evidently Coach K was on to something with Jordan.
