Fumika Matsumoto fired a 1-over 73 Wednesday to help College of the Desert’s women’s golf team to a victory in the nine-team Orange Empire Conference tournament at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course in Mission Viejo.
COD finished the day with a 342 score, 14 shots better than second-place Irvine Valley. Under the OEC rules, COD’s win counts as an 8-0 mark for the day, since the team beat all eight of the other conference teams.
Kabrea Rosas added an 84 for COD, with teammate Nadia Herrera shooting 88, Dominique Healey shooting 97 and Briana Luna shooting 107.
The Roadrunners (69-12 overall) will play Monday in the conference finals at Sun Lakes Country Club in Banning.
DVL individual preliminaries: The Palm Desert Aztecs predictably dominated the first round of the Desert Valley League finals, with 10 of the 12 players advancing to Thursday’s final round coming from Palm Desert.
Senior Jiyoon Jang of Palm Desert fired a 3-under 69 on the Valley Course at Marriott’s Desert Springs Resort, giving her a two-shot lead over teammate and fellow senior Kiki Liu.
Vera Markevich, a junior from Xavier Prep, shot 74, including a 3-under 34 on the back nine, and will begins Thursday’s final 18 holes in third place. Other players advancing to the final 18 holes included Madison Rincon of Palm Desert (75), Madison Walker of Palm Desert, (79), Lily Rodriguez of Palm Desert (81), Dana Condon of Palm Desert. (86), Sophia Zepeda of Palm Desert (87), Madison Vance of Palm Desert (91), Mariah Moon of La Quinta High School (93), Jennifer Hanson of Palm Desert (95) and Tiffany Carmichael of Palm Desert (98).
The top seven players after the final 18 holes will advance to CIF Southern Section individual regional play Monday at the Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim.
Indio 3, Cathedral City 0: The Rajahs scored a Desert Valley League win over the Lions Tuesday by scores of 25-15, 25-13, 25-23. Indio’s Marie De La Fuente was the star of the match, head coach Meagan Chafey said.
Chaffey 3, COD 2: The Roadrunners lost a tight fifth set to fall to Chaffey in Foothill League action by a score of 25-20, 24-26, 25-15, 23-25, 17-15.
Savannah Sharp had 22 kills, one service aces, four digs, two blocks and two block assists for COD. Alyssa Cazares had nine kills, one ace, 17 digs and two block assists. Angelica Sayo recorded seven kills, two aces, 14 digs and three block assists. Maygan Zink had 49 assists, 16 digs and two aces, while Kaylie Edgar had 42 digs and three aces.
COD (3-1, 6-9) will face Rio Hondo Friday at 5:30 p.m.
